My son who had recently turned 18 began having frequent bowel movements that soon became tainted with blood. I had never known of such problems and was sent to Dr. Fernandez's office by my confused pediatrician. Dr. Fernandez was the only one in this office who would see my son since he was so young. He was always professional with a genuinely concern for my son and for me as a mother of an "adult". After only a few days, he had my son in for a colonoscopy and had diagnosed him with UlcertiveI Colitis. I remember at one of our earliest appointments, I had brought with me a long Iist of questions. He answered each and every one I asked with respect and in a manner I could understand. He was seriously in our room for about 30 minutes. As we left the room and stopped by the nurses' desk for additional items, he came to his nurse and had her to cut a tag from his shirt. All I could think was this man had been in there with me for that long, answering my many questions and the whole time his tag was irritating his neck and he never let on or tried to rush me. He treated my son for over a year. He did eventually send us to Birmingham. I am pleased with UAB. But, I will forever be grateful to Dr. Fernandez for his treatment for my son. He is very knowledgeable and gentle. And that is a super quality for the area that he has to examine. I will continue to trust him with my son. Thanks to him, we are currently doing much better.
